Figma is a US collaborative design-software company, founded in 2012 and publicly listed, whose core product is a browser-based interface-design and prototyping platform. In 2025–2026 it moved to embed AI coding and agent capabilities into its design canvas as coding agents began generating production interfaces directly from prompts.
AI strategy and the Bud acquisition
On July 7, 2026, Figma acquired the team behind Bud (formerly Orchids), a Y Combinator-backed vibe-coding and AI-agent-creation platform, to bring AI coding and prototyping closer to its design canvas. Both Bud and Orchids will shut down by July 18, 2026; Bud CEO Kevin Lu said Figma is "a natural home for this exciting new era of work" (Source: techcrunch.com). The deal follows the team-acquihire structure documented in The AI Acquihire Pattern, with the target's products wound down at acquisition.
Relations with frontier labs
Figma withdrew from a planned launch partnership for Anthropic's Claude Design after Anthropic unveiled the product in April 2026, and accused Anthropic of deceptive communication — one of several business partners reported to have been blindsided by Anthropic shipping applications that compete with their products (Source: theinformation.com).
