Stripe

low confidence · updated 2026-08-25

Payments-infrastructure company whose 2025 results were driven substantially by payment processing for AI companies; valued near $159B in a February 2026 tender offer.

Stripe is a payments-infrastructure company founded in 2010 by Patrick and John Collison. Its financial results have become closely tied to the AI industry: it processes payments for many AI companies, and its own products incorporate machine-learning systems for fraud detection and billing.

Financials

Stripe generated $3.2 billion in cash in 2025 as revenue rose roughly a third to $6.8 billion, driven in part by payment processing for AI companies, per July 22, 2026 reporting; the company was valued near $159 billion in a February 2026 tender offer, and the cash position was reported as setting up an acquisition hunt (Source: theinformation.com; stripe.com).

Stripe wrote in a letter to investors dated August 19, 2026 that it had decided January 1 marked "the beginning of the singularity," which the letter defined as a large inflection in long-run trends such as a rise in the rate of new firm creation. The characterization is Stripe's own, advanced in an investor letter alongside the first-half figures in the Snapshot above, and is not an independent finding (Source: axios.com). OpenRouter acquisition

On July 23, 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported that Stripe was in talks to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model-routing marketplace, for roughly $10 billion — up from the $1.3 billion valuation set in OpenRouter's May 2026 Series B. Stripe already handles OpenRouter's payments; the deal would move Stripe into the infrastructure that more than five million developers use to access hundreds of AI models (Source: finance.yahoo.com; pymnts.com). Reporting published July 29, 2026 stated that a price near $10 billion would be about 70 times OpenRouter's recent annualized revenue, per a person with knowledge of its financials (Source: theinformation.com).

The talks became exclusive by August 6, 2026, when a report described Stripe as in exclusive talks to buy OpenRouter in a cash-and-stock deal valuing the marketplace at close to $10 billion. Only the publisher's abstract is retrievable, and the talks are exclusive rather than concluded (Source: theinformation.com).

Bloomberg reported on August 16, 2026 that Stripe had finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, citing people familiar with the matter; the reporters were Yazhou Sun, Natasha Mascarenhas and Paige Smith (Source: bloomberg.com). The reported figure is below the roughly $10 billion described in the July and early-August accounts, and no source reconciles the two. Neither company had confirmed the deal as of August 17; a Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation (Source: techcrunch.com).

Stripe told investors in its August 19, 2026 letter that it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter, describing it as its largest acquisition to date. The letter itself states no price. Two accounts published the same day supplied figures that differ from each other: the price was more than $8 billion, mostly in stock, per Axios, while a source cited by the New York Times put it at $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion going to OpenRouter's founders and $6 billion to its investors. Both sit below the roughly $10 billion carried in July and early-August accounts and alongside the more than $7 billion reported on August 16; no source reconciles the figures (Source: axios.com; nytimes.com).

Stripe published its own announcement of the deal on August 19, 2026. It states that OpenRouter's platform routes and optimizes token usage across more than 400 models from more than 80 providers, and that the service is already used by NVIDIA, Zoom and Lovable. Patrick Collison said that "tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI" and that the combined companies would help businesses "maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently." Alex Atallah, OpenRouter's cofounder and chief executive, said "intelligence will be multi-model: no single model will be optimal for every task, and developers need a neutral layer to orchestrate and manage them all." The announcement states no price, consistent with the investor letter of the same date (Source: stripe.com).

Two further figures appeared in the week after the announcement without reconciling the spread: more than $8 billion in an August 25, 2026 account, and $7 billion in a TechCrunch account of August 24 (Source: axios.com). The same account records that Meta is building a competing router called Switchboard, which it may use to lower its own AI costs, placing the routing layer Stripe is buying into contention with a hyperscaler's in-house alternative.
