Vercel

medium confidence · updated 2026-08-24

American cloud application company behind Next.js, the AI SDK, the AI Gateway, and v0. Repositioned around an 'AI Cloud' strategy; valued at $9.3B in its September 2025 Series F.

Vercel Inc. is an American cloud application company founded in 2015 by Guillermo Rauch, originally as ZEIT and renamed in 2020. It began as a deployment platform for front-end web applications and now sits in the AI stack at three points: as the maintainer of widely used developer libraries for building AI applications, as a routing layer between applications and model providers, and as the operator of a code-generation product and the sandbox environments in which agent-written code runs.

Products

Next.js, the React framework Vercel created and maintains, is the company's foundation. Vercel reported more than 500 million downloads in the twelve months to September 2025, exceeding the total from 2016 through 2024, and named Grok, Claude, and Cursor among the AI products using it for their front ends (Source: vercel.com). The company extended its framework stewardship beyond React by acquiring NuxtLabs, the team behind Nuxt and Nitro, committing to keep both MIT-licensed under open governance.

The AI SDK is an open-source TypeScript and JavaScript library for building streaming conversational interfaces and, later, agents. Vercel reported weekly downloads rising from 446,012 to 3,209,817 over the year to September 2025, describing it as the company's fastest-growing open-source project.

The AI Gateway is a single API through which applications reach multiple model providers, with reliability and cost controls. Its traffic data is used elsewhere in the wiki as a market-share indicator: as of May 13, 2026 the agentic share of tokens flowing through the Gateway was 58.9%, double the October 2025 level, with Anthropic taking 61% of spend and Google leading by volume at 38% — figures recorded on Financial Services — AI Deployment.

v0 is Vercel's code-generation product, released in 2023, which turns natural-language prompts into working interfaces and has since been rebuilt for production workflows — importing GitHub repositories, pulling environment variables from Vercel, opening branches and pull requests, and connecting to Snowflake and AWS databases. It won a 2025 Webby Award for developer tools. Vercel reported more than 4 million users as of February 2026 and shipped an open-source version in September 2025 (Source: sacra.com).

Vercel is a listed deployment partner for open-weight model releases, including gpt-oss and Grok 4.6, placing it in the distribution path for models it does not build.

Standards and security work

Vercel initiated the proposal that became Agent Plugins 1.0.0, the vendor-neutral specification for packaging Agent Skills and MCP servers into portable plugin directories published August 6, 2026. Representatives from Amazon Web Services, Anysphere, GitHub, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel refined it, and Vercel sits on the Technical Steering Committee.

On August 18, 2026 Vercel opened a two-week public HackerOne program offering up to $1,000,000 in total payouts for researchers who could escape a Vercel Sandbox — the microVM environment in which agent-generated code executes. The program is recorded on AI Coding Agents and closes September 1, 2026; sandbox escape is the relevant threat model for a platform whose deployments are increasingly initiated by agents rather than people.

The September 30, 2025 round was accompanied by an approximately $300 million tender offer for employees, former employees, and early investors. Sacra reports that over 30% of weekly deployments on Vercel are initiated by coding agents, up more than tenfold in six months, and that v0 operates on a separate $20/month premium tier with Teams and Enterprise plans accounting for more than half of v0 revenue. Named customers include OpenAI, Perplexity, Ramp, PayPal, and Under Armour. ARR figures here are third-party estimates rather than company disclosures.

Two structural exposures are commonly identified: the business is closely tied to Next.js adoption, and v0 competes directly with GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Bolt.new, Lovable, and Replit in a segment where the underlying capability is supplied by third-party model providers.
