AI agentic browsers are web browsers with built-in AI agents that take actions on behalf of the user, as distinct from chatbots (conversational) and AI coding assistants (IDE-embedded). They represent the 2025–2026 movement from AI-as-chat toward AI-as-actor occurring in the consumer browser.

Background and origin

Reporting on the category began before any product shipped. In November 2024, The Information reported that OpenAI was considering taking on Google with a browser. In July 2025, Reuters reported that OpenAI would release a web browser to challenge Google Chrome, and The Information published an analysis of what an OpenAI web browser would mean (2025-07-10). OpenAI's browser, Atlas, subsequently launched.

Other entrants followed through late 2025 and early 2026. Perplexity's Comet became available to everyone for free on 2025-10-02. On 2026-01-28, Google brought additional Gemini AI features to Chrome, rolling in agentic capabilities; WIRED published a first-person account of Google's "Auto Browse" agent taking over Chrome on 2026-01-30. Yahoo launched Scout as an AI answer engine app on 2026-01-27, with an AI user-interface announcement on 2026-01-28.

The category emerged alongside a contraction elsewhere in the browser market. The Browser Company abandoned development of its Arc browser in 2025; the newer wave of entrants, including Dia, is built around agentic browsing.

The standalone-browser form factor itself proved short-lived at OpenAI: on July 9, 2026 the company announced it is shutting down Atlas, launched October 2025, moving agentic browsing into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension — a shift from browser-as-product to agent-inside-existing-surfaces that coincided with the launch of its Codex-merged desktop "superapp" (Source: techcrunch.com). Anthropic moved in the same agent-inside-existing-surfaces direction: on July 12, 2026 it added a built-in browser to Claude Code on desktop, letting the agent read, click, and type on external websites, with write actions screened by classifiers, a clean no-login browsing profile, and organizational domain allowlists (Source: the-decoder.com).

Distribution and market position

The browser functions as a distribution point for consumer AI: control of the browser determines the default AI agent for its user base, which across the major incumbents numbers in the billions. This positions the category as a contested layer for consumer AI distribution.

Risks and concerns

Several risk areas distinguish agentic browsers from conversational chat interfaces:

  • Side-effects risk. Browsers that take actions on user accounts such as email, shopping, and banking create error-consequence asymmetries not present in chat interfaces, where output is read rather than acted upon.
  • Privacy. Agentic browsers require ambient context — what the user is doing and what they have read — producing a sensitive data stream.
  • Compliance and liability. If a browser submits a form with false information, the allocation of liability is unsettled; existing consumer-protection and errors-and-omissions regimes were not designed for agents.
  • Platform-access economics. Agentic browsers consume platform infrastructure (HTTP requests, content, transactional inventory) without participating in platform monetization. Cloudflare's pay-per-crawl is the first market mechanism for pricing this externality, and Amazon v. Perplexity is the litigation track. Shahidi et al.   • Agent ownership. The agent supply archetypes framework distinguishes bring-your-own agents (Comet, Atlas) from "bowling-shoe" platform agents (Walmart, Amazon); agentic browsers are the canonical bring-your-own horizontal quadrant.
