Effective Accelerationism (e/acc)

An ideological movement holding that technological progress — and AI progress in particular — should be accelerated as fast as possible, on the view that intelligence and energy growth are intrinsically good and that attempts to slow or heavily regulate AI cause more harm than the risks they aim to prevent. Defined largely in opposition to AI-safety/'doomer' and effective-altruism positions; influential in parts of Silicon Valley and the venture-capital world.

Effective accelerationism (stylized e/acc) is a techno-optimist ideological movement, originating in pseudonymous Twitter/X discourse around 2022, that holds technological and especially AI progress should be accelerated as fast as possible. Its core claim is that the growth of intelligence and energy use is an intrinsic good aligned with the "will of the universe," that markets and competition will steer powerful technology to broadly beneficial ends, and that efforts to slow, pause, or heavily regulate AI are net-harmful — both because they forgo large upside and because they cede ground to less safety-conscious actors. It is best understood as a position rather than a settled empirical claim.

Origins and core tenets

The term was popularized by pseudonymous figures, notably "Beff Jezos," later identified as engineer Guillaume Verdon, and a loose set of essays and manifestos. Its recurring tenets are:

  • Acceleration is treated as good: technological progress, growth, and rising energy throughput are framed as the engine of human flourishing, and decelerating them as the primary moral error.
  • It is anti-precautionary: heavy regulation, "pauses," and precautionary AI-safety regimes are characterized as based on speculative risk and as imposing certain costs to avoid uncertain harms.
  • It expresses faith in emergent order: competitive markets and decentralized experimentation, rather than central planning or coordinated slowdown, are expected to produce good outcomes.
  • It is defined in opposition to "doomerism": e/acc positions itself substantially against AI-existential-risk arguments (see AI Existential Risk) and against the AI Safety Cases and Frameworks worldview, which it characterizes as fear-driven.

Relationship to effective altruism and AI safety

e/acc developed as a reaction against effective altruism (EA) and the AI-safety movement that grew out of it. Where EA-influenced AI safety emphasizes long-termism, existential risk, and the case for caution and governance, e/acc inverts the valence: it shares the premise that AI is world-historically important but concludes that the dominant risk is moving too slowly. The two camps map onto much of the "doomer vs. accelerationist" framing that organizes Silicon Valley AI-politics debate. Influence and contestation

e/acc has spread well beyond its online origins, shaping the rhetoric of parts of the venture-capital and founder community and informing arguments for light-touch AI regulation, open-weight model release, and rapid commercialization. Critics advance several arguments against it:

  • That it conflates description with normativity: the claim that "the universe favors intelligence/energy growth" is treated as a value judgment dressed as physics.
  • That it under-weights tail risks: safety advocates argue that maximal acceleration is rational only if catastrophic-risk probabilities are near zero, which is precisely what is contested.
  • That it serves incumbent interests: opponents note that "accelerate and don't regulate" aligns with the commercial interests of those advancing it.

Organized advocacy on the opposing side includes groups such as ControlAI, with public figures such as Sir Stephen Fry, which campaign for binding AI-safety legislation such as the UK Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill (ControlAI draft, May 28, 2026), explicitly against the accelerationist default. Accelerationists respond that such campaigns overstate speculative risk and would, if enacted, entrench slower, less competitive, and ultimately less safe outcomes by concentrating frontier development in fewer hands.
