The Long Industrial Revolution is a periodization concept used by Henry Farrell and Cosma Rohilla Shalizi, and in adjacent work by Alison Gopnik and James Evans, to situate AI in historical context. It holds that the Industrial Revolution is best understood not as a discrete event bounded to roughly 1760–1840 — steam, factories, textiles — but as a centuries-long, still-unfinished transformation of human capacities to organize economic, social, and political life.

On this view, the decisive innovations of modernity are not only machines but social technologies: systematic means of reorganizing relationships among human beings. Bureaucracies, markets, print capitalism, the price mechanism, opinion surveys, and democracy itself are all entries in this lineage, each a way of processing information about a complex society by reducing it to tractable abstractions (see AI as Social Technology). Argumentative role in the Farrell-Shalizi account
