Alex Pentland is the Toshiba Professor at the MIT Media Lab (Emeritus) and a professor at Stanford HAI, known for work in computational social science, network economics, and privacy-preserving distributed ledgers. He co-founded the MIT Connection Science Initiative and the Trust::Data Consortium, and is a co-editor of the Digitalist Papers.
Background and research
Pentland's research spans several lines of work in computational social science. His early-2000s "Reality Mining" research used smartphone sensor data to study human behavior at population scale. His 2014 book Social Physics set out statistical laws he argued govern human social behavior observable in digital traces. He has worked on data cooperatives — distributed-ledger approaches to giving individuals ownership over their own data — and on Trust::Data and MIT Connection Science, architectures for privacy-preserving computation across institutional boundaries.
Several strands of this earlier work bear on current AI policy debates. Pentland has been associated with ideas such as "post-algorithmic compensation" for data producers, anticipating AI dividends proposals. His Open Algorithms (OPAL) framework for privacy-preserving analytics has influenced thinking on data access for research, including Persily's "public compute" prescription.
Digitalist Papers
Pentland is a co-editor, with Brynjolfsson, Persily, Rice, and Aristidou, of Digitalist Papers Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He contributed essays to both volumes.
In Vol. 1, "Rediscovering the Pleasures of Pluralism," co-authored with Lily L. Tsai, argues for digital civic infrastructure that enables both local and national direct democracy. It borrows Bernardo Zacka's concept of "in-between spaces" (balconies, stoops) to describe "reserved sociability" — civic participation at modulated distance. The essay argues that existing platforms collapsed this dimension and that new designs must restore it.
In Vol. 2, "Transformative AI in Financial Systems," co-authored with Alex Lipton, argues that AI combined with tokenization of real-world assets will reshape finance. The essay frames this as both promising — inclusive ownership, real-time modeling — and dangerous, citing AI-coordinated instant coalitions, cornering of essential-resource markets, and instability resembling 2008 at higher speed. It argues that auditing and regulation are a non-negotiable complement to technical progress.

Across this work Pentland advances an engineering-plus-governance approach to problems often treated as primarily political, expressing optimism about combinations of AI and distributed-ledger technology while cautioning against their misuse.
