Anastasis Germanidis is a co-founder and co-CEO of Runway. He has been a proponent of Runway's strategic pivot from video-AI toward world models, the position that observational data such as video and sensor data is less biased training data than text and will produce the next AI paradigm.
Background
Germanidis was born in Athens and came to the United States at 18 to study neuroscience and film, later returning to computer science. He is a graduate of NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). He met fellow Runway co-founders Cristóbal Valenzuela and Alejandro Matamala Ortiz at NYU ITP in 2016.
Roles
Germanidis co-founded Runway and serves as co-CEO alongside Cristóbal Valenzuela, with the two splitting CEO duties.
Positions and statements
Germanidis has argued for prioritizing world models over language models. In a TechCrunch feature published May 15, 2026, he framed the limits of language-model training and the case for observational data:
"We're basically bound by our own understanding of reality."
"Language models are trained on the entire internet, on message boards and social media, on textbooks — distilling existing human knowledge. But to get beyond that, we need to leverage less biased data."
"If we can build a better scientist than human scientists, we can accelerate progress in how we understand the universe and how we solve problems."
(All quotes from TechCrunch feature, May 15, 2026.) He has described his long-horizon target as biological world models and anti-aging research.
Germanidis describes the compounding effect of training a single model on many modalities (text, video, voice, sensors) as a structural advantage, treating single-modality models as stepping stones. See World Models.
