Gabe Pereyra is a co-founder of Harvey, the legal AI company. He writes on Harvey's blog about how the shift to autonomous agents is reorganizing engineering work and, in his argument, is poised to do the same for legal work.
Positions and statements
Pereyra's central argument, set out in How Autonomous Agents Will Transform Legal (Pereyra / Harvey, April 2026) (Apr 2, 2026), is that intelligence is replacing hierarchy as the coordination layer organizations run on. Borrowing a framing he attributes to Sequoia Capital, he argues that large organizations have historically been built as information-routing hierarchies because information had to move through people, and that autonomous agents now take on that coordination function directly — monitoring systems, carrying context across teams, triggering work, and surfacing decisions. The change he describes is to the coordination layer itself, not only to task throughput (see Intelligence Replaces Hierarchy).
For legal work specifically, Pereyra argues that each matter, together with its associated documents, messages, research, and workflows, can be analogized to a standalone world model within which teams of AI agents can operate. In his account this does not displace lawyers but changes how matters are coordinated, how judgment is applied, and where leverage is found.
He describes Harvey's internal agent system, named Spectre after a Dota 2 character, as increasingly handling both engineering and non-engineering work, often triggered not by a human prompt but by the system monitoring incidents, bug reports, customer feedback, and Slack messages. He writes: "In practice, Spectre is the beginning of a company world model: a live picture of what is happening inside Harvey and what needs to happen next."
Pereyra argues that engineering is reorganizing around agents first because software already lives inside a machine-readable loop, and because the labs had reason to make models strong at code first, since code is how the next generation of these systems gets built. He frames legal as the next domain to follow. He cites the coding models Claude Opus 4.5, Claude Opus 4.6, and GPT-5.3 Codex as driving the engineering shift.
He also argues that in-house legal teams will play a dual role: transformed by agents in their own direct work, while also serving as stewards for AI governance across the company. In this view they will increasingly be asked to govern how the rest of the company uses agents — where accountability sits, what risks are tolerable, and how trust is earned.
On organizational leverage, Pereyra argues that throughput stops being the meaningful constraint. As the speed at which employees can work alone asymptotes, he writes, institutions need to relearn how to go far together; leverage is no longer about how much one organization can produce but about how much context people, teams, and institutions can coordinate across humans and agents. He notes that this is difficult even for an AI-native company.
Background
Pereyra has recounted "agent-pilling" his retired parents, both PhD computer scientists, by walking them through Claude Code on a scientific computing test-coverage problem. His mother led autocorrect at Apple for 30 years, and his father was a Stanford computer science professor who pioneered scientific computing methods that he describes as having become neural networks. His mother had estimated the work at a month; the agent completed it in 20 minutes. Pereyra uses the anecdote to argue that even insiders are still being caught off guard by recent capability jumps.
