Charles III is King of the United Kingdom. He has used his position, first as Prince of Wales and then as King, to convene discussions on a range of global issues (Source: reuters.com). On September 17, 2026 he hosted leaders of frontier AI developers at Dumfries House in Scotland and told them that safeguards were needed before it was "too late."
Background and earlier statements on AI
Dumfries House in Ayrshire is the headquarters of The King's Foundation, a charity Charles founded in 1990 to advocate on environmental and social issues (Source: politico.eu).
He addressed the AI Safety Summit, telling it: "If we are to realize the untold benefits of AI, then we must work together in combatting its significant risks." Jensen Huang said the King gave him a copy of that address when Huang and other AI pioneers received an award from the King in November (Source: politico.eu). A speech by the King stated that his government "will seek to establish the appropriate legislation to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful artificial intelligence models" (CAIDP AI & Democratic Values Index 2026).
Technology executives attended several of his official engagements before the 2026 meeting. He hosted a banquet at Windsor Castle during Donald Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom in September 2025, attended by technology leaders including Huang and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman; the visit coincided with a US–UK Tech Prosperity Deal, which was later suspended over trade disagreements. During a state visit to Washington in April 2026 he met Huang and executives from Apple, Amazon and Google and highlighted US–UK collaboration on AI (Source: politico.eu).
The Dumfries House meeting (September 2026)
The meeting was first reported on September 7, 2026 by two people familiar with the plans, who said around 30 high-profile people from the AI industry had been invited, that ministers would also be invited, and that the event was being organized by the Ditchley Foundation. A royal official said that "one of the king's unique abilities as sovereign and global statesmen is his ability to convene top level stakeholders," and that the King would not issue his own thoughts but wanted to "convene, engage, listen and encourage debate" (Source: politico.eu).
The meeting took place on September 17, 2026 at Dumfries House in Cumnock, East Ayrshire. The guests included Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder and chairman Demis Hassabis, OpenAI chief financial officer Sarah Friar, Anthropic's chief global affairs officer Tino Cuéllar, the UK Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan, and Paolo Benanti, an adviser to the pope who has urged governments to slow AI development. It was not expected to produce binding agreements (Source: reuters.com). The Royal Family's account on X posted an excerpt of his remarks (Source: itv.com).
Although the royal official had said beforehand that the King would not issue his own thoughts, he addressed the meeting. He described the development of artificial superintelligence, and its "substance and its pace," as "intriguing and deeply concerning in equal measure," and said AI "is already showing its immense capacity to improve and save life – for example, in the field of life sciences and medicine." He continued: "Yet, those who have created these technologies are now increasingly warning that AI risks developing darker capacities – perhaps even to take life. In this regard, if I may say so, there seems urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways. Surely, we need sufficient means of control before it is all too late. Those in our world who value deeply our humanity and its vital moral component are anxiously seeking your reassurance that we will not lose control of our destiny, or our souls" (Source: itv.com; reuters.com).
He put two questions to the attendees: "First, how can we harness the benefits of AI, with safety at its heart? And, second how can we build international co-operation and consensus to achieve this, so no nation is left behind, but the human race is left in place?" He added: "This may sound hyperbolic. I have long thought it is just enlightened realism," said that "our humanity must remain sacred," and told the executives that "the task before you is not merely to advance technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world. As we embrace what is new, we must not lose what is timeless" (Source: itv.com).
Speaking to broadcasters on the sidelines, Huang said AI had to be built with "responsible optimism," with the onus on developers, and that companies had to become more rigorous about whether products were ready before release: "If it's not ready, just hold it back. … You should go as fast as you can, but no faster than that." He said the King had raised AI safety the first time they met: "If there's anybody who spoke more profoundly and more deeply about responsible optimism, the King was one of the first to express it to me" (Source: reuters.com).
The meeting took place amid a debate over whether the industry can and should regulate itself, which had drawn interventions from figures including Pope Leo XIV and President Trump, and after Dario Amodei urged companies to slow the pace of AI development (Source: reuters.com). The King's remarks called for control and international consensus without endorsing a slowdown or naming a mechanism. See Coordinated slowdown proposals compared.
