MRCR

medium confidence · updated 2026-09-22

Tests whether a model can find and reproduce one specific passage among near-identical ones hidden in a very long conversation, up to a million tokens. Multi-round co-reference resolution was devised at Google DeepMind (Michelangelo paper, 2024); OpenAI published an open dataset, OpenAI-MRCR, with GPT-4.1 in April 2025, and Google open-sourced its own MRCR v2 in February 2026. The two datasets share a name and a scoring rule but are not interchangeable.

MRCR (multi-round co-reference resolution) is a synthetic long-context test. The model is given a long conversation in which a user repeatedly asks for short pieces of writing, several of the requests being identical, and must then reproduce exactly the response to one particular instance, for example the second poem about tapirs. It originated at Google DeepMind, which described it in the Michelangelo paper of September 2024 Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024). Two open implementations are now in use: OpenAI-MRCR, released with GPT-4.1 on 14 April 2025 (Source: openai.com), which OpenAI and Anthropic report, and Google DeepMind's MRCR v2, reported in Gemini model cards since 2025 and open-sourced in February 2026 (Source: github.com). Scores are given by number of "needles" (identical requests) and by context length.

What it measures

The Michelangelo authors built MRCR as an alternative to the needle-in-a-haystack test, in which one out-of-place sentence is inserted into a long document and the model is asked to retrieve it (see Context Length and Long Context). Their objection is that such a needle is "quite apparently different from the rest of the text," so retrieval succeeds without any understanding of the surrounding material. In MRCR the needles are drawn from the same distribution as everything else in the context, several of them match the query equally well, and only their order distinguishes them, so the model has to use information in two places in the context. The paper places the task within a framework it calls Latent Structure Queries: the context encodes a hidden data structure (here, a dictionary keyed by topic and writing format, holding an ordered list of responses) and the query asks for one element of it. The authors recommend MRCR and its extensions as "a suitable default replacement" for needle-in-a-haystack Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024).

OpenAI introduced its version with the observation that GPT-4.1 already retrieved a single needle at every position up to one million tokens, while "few real-world tasks are as straightforward as retrieving a single, obvious needle answer" (Source: openai.com). Anthropic describes the benchmark as testing "both long context comprehension and precise sequential reasoning" and reports it under the heading of "context rot," the degradation of performance as a conversation lengthens (Claude Opus 4.6 System Card; Source: anthropic.com).

Design

Task format

OpenAI's dataset card gives a two-needle example. The conversation contains, in order, a user request "Write a poem about tapirs" and the assistant's poem, a request for a blog post about rocks, a second "Write a poem about tapirs" with a different poem, a request for a social-media post about tapirs, and a second blog post about rocks. The final user turn reads: "Prepend aYooSG8CQg to the 2nd (1 indexed) poem about tapirs. Do not include any other text in your response." The correct output is that random string followed by the second tapir poem, word for word. Distractors differ from the target in topic (a poem about frogs), in format (a short story about tapirs), or only in position (the first tapir poem) (Source: huggingface.co; Source: openai.com).

Construction

Everything is machine-generated. In the Michelangelo version the assistant turns were produced by prompting PaLM 2 for many outputs per topic and format, and the passage to be reproduced can run to 512 tokens. In OpenAI-MRCR all assistant responses were generated by GPT-4o, drawing on 438 topics ("entities") and 10 writing formats; each conversation hides 2, 4 or 8 identical requests; and there are 100 conversations for each needle count in each of eight length bins, from 4,096–8,192 tokens up to 524,288–1,048,576 tokens, 2,400 in all. The data is public under an MIT licence (Source: Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024); Source: huggingface.co). Because the material is synthetic, the Michelangelo authors describe the evaluation as "unleaked," meaning it cannot have been seen on the web before release, and new instances can be generated at any length.

Scoring

The score for one item is the ratio returned by the SequenceMatcher class in Python's standard difflib library, a number between 0 and 1 expressing how much of the model's output matches the reference passage. If the output does not begin with the required random string the item scores 0; otherwise the string is stripped from both sides before comparison. The benchmark score is the mean over items, which OpenAI and Anthropic call the mean match ratio, reported per needle count and length bin. The random prefix serves two purposes in the original design: it checks instruction-following and marks where the reproduced passage starts. The Michelangelo authors note that a similarity score, unlike exact match, yields "a very smooth context-performance curve" (Source: Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024); Source: huggingface.co). No human baseline has been reported for any version.

Versions and variants

Michelangelo MRCR (2024)

The first published form, attributed in the paper to the earlier Gemini 1.5 report, used at most one confounding passage with the same topic and format as the target, equivalent to two needles. The paper evaluated ten models from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic to 128K tokens and the Gemini 1.5 models to one million, and published results as curves without a table of figures Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024).

OpenAI-MRCR (April 2025) and v2 (December 2025)

OpenAI's card says its version, which comes in 2-, 4- and 8-needle variants, expands the task's difficulty and "provides opensource data for reproducing results." On 5 December 2025 OpenAI replaced faulty items after an outside researcher, Dillon Uzar, reported consistently failing samples: a generation bug had given about 10% of conversations too many target needles and about 5% incorrect reference answers. OpenAI calls the corrected data OpenAI-MRCR v2 and has reported on it since GPT-5.2 (Source: huggingface.co; Source: openai.com). Anthropic's system cards specify "the published version from OpenAI with the v2 fix" (Claude Opus 4.6 System Card).

Google MRCR v2 (2025; open-sourced February 2026)

The Gemini 2.5 technical report describes MRCR-V2 as "a significantly harder instance of the MRCR family": each request now carries a style as well as a topic and format ("write a poem about penguins in an archaic style"), and Google switched its headline setting from 4 needles to 8. Google reports two statistics: an average over contexts up to 128K tokens, which it calls cumulative and uses for comparison with other developers' models, and a "pointwise" score at exactly one million tokens (Source: arxiv.org). In its Gemini 3 Pro evaluation notes of November 2025 Google described this dataset as "not publicly available yet"; it published the data, generation code and scoring script on 18–19 February 2026, with context lengths up to eight million tokens (Source: deepmind.google; Source: github.com).

A figure labelled "MRCR v2 (8-needle)" can therefore refer to either of two datasets with different text, different distractor structure and different aggregation. Anthropic's and OpenAI's figures are on OpenAI's data; figures in Google's model cards, including those Google computes for Claude and GPT models, are on Google's.

Graphwalks, released by OpenAI alongside OpenAI-MRCR, fills the context with a directed graph whose nodes are hexadecimal hashes and asks for all nodes at a given depth in a breadth-first search from a starting node, or for a node's parents. OpenAI's stated rationale is that an MRCR problem could in principle be solved in one read-through, whereas Graphwalks "cannot be solved sequentially" (Source: openai.com). Recent reports use F1 scores at 256K and one million tokens: on the breadth-first task at one million tokens OpenAI gave 45.4% for GPT-5.5 against 9.4% for GPT-5.4, and later 77.1% for GPT-5.6 Sol against 79.4% for Claude Mythos 5 (Source: openai.com; Source: openai.com). Anthropic reports both benchmarks in the long-context sections of its Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 system cards and states that it corrected mislabelled items when running Graphwalks (Claude Opus 4.6 System Card; Claude Sonnet 4.6 System Card).

LongBench v2 uses realistic documents and multiple-choice questions rather than synthetic retrieval. The 2026 Stanford AI Index cites it for the finding that human experts scored 53.7% under a 15-minute limit against 57.7% for the best model in the original study (Stanford HAI AI Index Report 2026); Z.ai reported 64.5% for GLM-5 against 68.2% for Gemini 3 Pro (GLM-5: from Vibe Coding to Agentic Engineering (Zhipu AI, 2026)). Fiction.liveBench, a narrative-comprehension test, is the benchmark Epoch AI pairs with MRCR in its analysis of usable context length (Source: epoch.ai).

Development and maintainers

The Michelangelo paper has 24 authors, 22 at Google DeepMind and two at Google Research, with Kiran Vodrahalli as corresponding author Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024). OpenAI maintains its dataset on Hugging Face with a changelog, and Google DeepMind maintains MRCR v2 in its eval_hub repository; neither runs a leaderboard. The closest thing to one is Context Arena, an independent site run by Dillon Uzar that evaluates models on both datasets across all length bins and reports scores, area-under-curve summaries and run costs. Epoch AI has used its data, Anthropic's system cards cite it for other developers' models, and Google DeepMind's repository points to it as an example of full context-versus-performance curves (Source: contextarena.ai; Source: epoch.ai; Claude Opus 4.6 System Card; Source: github.com). Context Arena marks some runs as sponsored by a provider through donated API credits.

Results

The Michelangelo paper found that every model it tested lost substantial accuracy before 32K tokens; GPT and Claude models led below 8K, Gemini 1.5 models led beyond that, and only the Gemini models could be run to one million tokens, where their curves flattened rather than continuing to fall Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024). At OpenAI-MRCR's release GPT-4.1 scored 57.2% on the 2-needle task at 128K and 46.3% at one million tokens, against 31.9% at 128K for GPT-4o (Source: openai.com). Reporting then moved to the 8-needle setting. OpenAI reported GPT-5.2 Thinking as the first model it had seen near 100% on the 4-needle variant out to 256K tokens, with 77.0% on 8 needles at 128K–256K (Source: openai.com). At the longest bin, 512K to one million tokens, developer-reported 8-needle scores rose from 18.5% for Claude Sonnet 4.5 to 76.0% for Claude Opus 4.6 in February 2026, and OpenAI's from 36.6% for GPT-5.4 to 74.0% for GPT-5.5; in the 256K–512K bin OpenAI reported 91.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol against 81.5% for GPT-5.5 and 57.5% for GPT-5.4 (Claude Opus 4.6 System Card; Source: openai.com; Source: openai.com). On Google's dataset, Gemini's pointwise score at one million tokens has stayed near 26% from Gemini 3 Pro through Gemini 3.5 Flash (Source: deepmind.google).

Google MRCR v2, 8-needle, up to 128K (cumulative)

Google DeepMind's dataset; average over contexts up to 128K tokens. All figures come from Google DeepMind's model cards and reports. Google states that it computed every figure in the May 2026 table itself; the earlier documents do not say who ran the other developers' models, though the dataset was not public before February 2026.

Interpreting scores

Which dataset and which statistic

The tables above are not comparable with one another. Beyond the difference between OpenAI's and Google's data, Google's "128k (average)" is a cumulative mean over all contexts up to 128K tokens, most of them much shorter, while OpenAI's and Anthropic's figures are for a single length bin and Context Arena's "128k" column is a score at that length. For Gemini 3.1 Pro, Google's cumulative figure is 84.9% and Context Arena's at-128K figure on the same dataset is 57.6%; Context Arena's area-under-curve summary to 128K for the same run is 77.4% (Source: deepmind.google; Source: contextarena.ai).

Floor

The metric is a similarity ratio, so a wrong but similar passage earns partial credit. Google DeepMind estimates that a model returning one of the relevant needles at random would score about 51% with 2 needles, 27% with 4 and 15% with 8, and that a model returning any passage from the conversation at random would score about 1%; a model that ignores the format or returns nothing can score lower still. The Michelangelo paper's corresponding estimates for its two-needle version were 9% and 4% (Source: github.com; Source: Michelangelo: Long Context Evaluations Beyond Haystacks via Latent Structure Queries (Vodrahalli et al., Google DeepMind, 2024)). By that estimate, a 2-needle score near 50% is what choosing at random between the two candidates would produce.

Tools

Google DeepMind's repository warns that "if the model is given access to code tools, the task becomes considerably simpler," and that "any report of MRCR should explicitly state whether or not tools were provided to the model, as otherwise the comparison is not meaningful" (Source: github.com).

Token limits

Bin boundaries are counted with OpenAI's tokenizer. Anthropic found that some items in the 512K–1M bin exceed the one-million-token limit of its public API under its own tokenizer, so its headline figures for that bin come from internal runs that are "not reproducible via the public API"; for Claude Sonnet 4.6 it reports 65.8% on the full bin and 77.8% on the 29 items that fit (Claude Sonnet 4.6 System Card). Google states that the one-million-token version of its dataset does not fit the context window of non-Gemini models (Source: deepmind.google).

What the score does not show

Epoch AI, using Context Arena's 2-needle data together with Fiction.liveBench, estimated in June 2025 that the input length at which leading models keep 80% accuracy had grown more than 250-fold in nine months, faster than context windows themselves, while cautioning that "many long-context tasks are likely more difficult than these benchmarks"; it noted that the best model then, Gemini 2.5 Pro, exceeded 80% on the 8-needle task only at 8K tokens (Source: epoch.ai). The 2026 Stanford AI Index repeats the estimate under the heading "The Gap Between Long Context Windows and Deep Understanding" (Stanford HAI AI Index Report 2026).

Limitations and criticism

The task is deliberately minimal, and critics focus on that. A blog post by a researcher writing as "wh" argues that a useful long-context test should make both finding the relevant material and using it difficult, whereas MRCR's final step is only to repeat a passage: "Compare 'Repeat the second poem about Tapirs' in MRCR to 'Find the mistake present in this financial report.'" The post observes that several models exceed 95% on OpenAI-MRCR at 8K tokens, so that what the benchmark measures at length is mostly the search, and that reporting a mean match ratio rather than exact match hides cases where a model finds the passage but fails to copy it faithfully (Source: nrehiew.github.io). Chroma's July 2025 "Context Rot" report cites MRCR as an example of distractor-based evaluation and states that "there remains a lack of investigation into the impact of distractors in long context settings" (Source: research.trychroma.com).

The first public dataset contained errors for eight months: about 5% of reference answers were wrong and about 10% of items had too many needles until the December 2025 fix, so OpenAI-MRCR figures published before and after that date are on slightly different data (Source: huggingface.co).

Because conversations can be generated at will, the format is easy to train on. Z.ai's GLM-5 technical report states that its 200K-token mid-training stage "incorporated a small proportion of MRCR-like data, with multiple variants designed to extend OpenAI's original paradigm, to strengthen recall in extended multi-turn dialogues" (GLM-5: from Vibe Coding to Agentic Engineering (Zhipu AI, 2026)). Google DeepMind's Gemini 2.5 report likewise lists MRCR-V2 among the evaluations it targeted while "hill-climbing" on long-context quality (Source: arxiv.org).

Most comparative figures for other developers' models are produced by a competitor: Google computes MRCR v2 scores for Claude and GPT models, OpenAI lists Claude results, and Anthropic relies on Context Arena and competitors' self-reports. Context Arena applies one harness across developers' models and marks some of its runs as provider-sponsored (Source: contextarena.ai).

Use in policy and safety frameworks

MRCR is reported as a capability measure in OpenAI's launch posts from GPT-4.1 to GPT-5.6, in Anthropic's Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.7 system cards, and in Google DeepMind's Gemini model cards and technical reports, as sourced above (Claude Opus 4.7 System Card). None of these documents ties it to a threshold in a frontier-safety framework. The relation between advertised and usable context windows is covered in Context Length and Long Context.
