"Machines of Loving Grace" is an essay by Dario Amodei (CEO of Anthropic), published around October 2024 on darioamodei.com. The essay's biology section is associated with the idea of the Compressed 21st Century: Amodei predicts that AI-enabled biology will compress 50–100 years of progress into 5–10 years. He argues the returns to intelligence here are high because a small number of breakthrough discoveries (CRISPR, mRNA vaccines, AlphaFold, optogenetics) drive more than 50% of biological progress, and such discoveries tend to be made by a tiny number of researchers, could often have been made years earlier, and are frequently scrappy rather than massively funded.

He describes four routes of progress: traditional molecular biology, chemistry, and genetics; fine-grained neural measurement and intervention (optogenetics, neural probes); advanced computational neuroscience, in which insights from AI training apply to the brain; and behavioral interventions such as AI coaches and personalized therapy. Amodei expresses less confidence here than in biology, citing human constraints and corruption as significant obstacles. He nonetheless suggests that 50% of AI-driven health benefits could propagate to the poorest countries within 5–10 years, and sets out a "dream scenario" of 20% annual GDP growth in the developing world. Other elements include an AI-driven Green Revolution for food security; climate change mitigation through carbon removal, clean energy, and lab-grown meat; and within-country inequality being addressable through markets and political institutions. He raises the "opt-out problem," in which anti-technology movements could create a dystopian underclass, but argues that historically most people adopt beneficial technologies voluntarily.

Amodei calls this the most uncertain domain, arguing that AI does not structurally favor democracy because it can help both sides. He proposes an "entente strategy": a coalition of democracies secures the AI supply chain and frontier capability; uses AI for military superiority (the "stick"); distributes AI benefits to a wider group of countries in exchange for their support of democratic norms (the "carrot"), an approach he likens to "Atoms for Peace"; isolates the worst adversaries until they accept the bargain; and aims for an "eternal 1991," a durable democratic advantage. Amodei describes work and meaning as the most difficult question. In the short term, he argues, comparative advantage keeps humans economically relevant; in the long term, AI will be so broadly effective and cheap that the current economic setup breaks down. On meaning, he argues that it comes from human relationships rather than economic productivity, that people enjoy activities with zero economic value, and that AI being able to do something better does not make human effort meaningless.
