LiveCodeBench is a coding benchmark that continuously collects new problems from programming contests on LeetCode, AtCoder and Codeforces and records the date each problem was published. Because every problem is dated, a model can be scored only on problems released after its training data was collected, which is the benchmark's defence against contamination (test items leaking into training data). It was introduced in March 2024 by Naman Jain and colleagues at UC Berkeley, MIT and Cornell LiveCodeBench: Holistic and Contamination Free Evaluation of Large Language Models for Code (Jain et al., 2024). Beyond writing code, it tests three related skills: repairing a failed program, predicting what a program will output, and predicting the correct output for a test input. The best model in the paper solved 41.9% of code-generation problems; the official leaderboard's last window, ending May 2025, is led at 80.2%, and developers and third-party evaluators have since reported scores above 90%.
What it measures
The authors argue that the coding tests then in use, HumanEval, MBPP and APPS, "may paint a skewed or misleading picture" for two reasons: they cover only translation of a natural-language description into code, and they "may be subject to potential contamination or overfitting, as benchmark samples are present in the training datasets" LiveCodeBench: Holistic and Contamination Free Evaluation of Large Language Models for Code (Jain et al., 2024). LiveCodeBench is presented as "holistic and contamination free." The capability measured is algorithmic problem solving of the kind set in programming contests: short, self-contained problems with exact input and output specifications. The authors state the limit of that construct themselves: contest problems "might not be representative of the 'most general' notion of LLM programming capabilities," and they recommend the benchmark "as a starting point."
Design
Dataset construction
The authors wrote scrapers for the three contest sites. From LeetCode they take all weekly and biweekly contests after April 2023; from AtCoder the beginner ("abc") rounds, excluding problems rated above 500 and avoiding the harder rounds "designed for more advanced Olympiad participants"; from Codeforces only Division 3 and Division 4 contests, and only "a small fraction" of those, because they found Codeforces problems "considerably more difficult." Problems with images, or with several acceptable answers, are excluded. Each problem is labelled Easy, Medium or Hard from the platform's own difficulty rating. The authors note that the problems have already been vetted by "thousands of participants." In the May 2024 release, 267 of 511 problems came from AtCoder, 235 from LeetCode and 9 from Codeforces.
Hidden test cases are not always available from the platforms. AtCoder publishes its tests; for LeetCode the authors use GPT-4-Turbo to write input generators from the problem specification, in addition to collecting some failing tests from the platform. Problems average about 17 tests each.
Task format
A code-generation item is a contest problem statement with example inputs and outputs. One example displayed by Artificial Analysis begins: "You are given a 0-indexed integer array nums and an integer k. In one operation, you can pick any index i of nums ... and replace nums[i] and nums[i + 1] with a single occurrence of nums[i] & nums[i + 1]," and asks for a program computing a minimum over a limited number of such operations (Source: artificialanalysis.ai). The four scenarios are:
- Code generation. Write a program that passes all hidden tests.
- Self-repair. Given the problem, a wrong program, the failing test and the error message, produce a corrected program.
- Code execution. Given a program and an input, state the output (479 samples from 85 problems in the paper).
- Test output prediction. Given the problem and an input, state the correct output (442 instances from 181 LeetCode problems).
Scoring
The metric is pass@1: the probability that a single generated answer is correct. The paper estimates it by sampling 10 answers per problem at temperature 0.2 and taking the fraction that are correct. A program must pass every test to count. Scores are reported overall and by difficulty band, and the leaderboard lets a reader choose the time window of problems. For a new model, the authors evaluate only on problems released after its training cutoff, using its release date where no cutoff is published.
Contamination controls
The dated design is the control, and the paper uses it to detect contamination as well as avoid it. DeepSeek's code models, released in September 2023, showed "a stark drop" on LeetCode problems published after August 2023; the base model DS-Base-33B fell from a pass@1 of about 60 on May 2023 problems to about 0 on September problems, which the authors read as "the likely inclusion of competition problems in the pretraining." GPT-4o similarly dropped on problems after its November 2023 cutoff. GPT-4-Turbo, Gemini Pro, Mistral Large and the Claude 3 models showed no such break. The paper also plotted models on HumanEval+ against LiveCodeBench-Easy and found a cluster, mainly fine-tuned open models, that scored well on the former and poorly on the latter; DeepSeek-Instruct-1.3B scored 60 and 26. The authors conclude that "many models that perform well on HumanEval might be overfitting on the benchmark."
No human baseline is reported, and the paper does not give a cost to run.
Versions and variants
The dataset is released in cumulative versions: release_v1 (May 2023 to March 2024, 400 problems), v2 (to May 2024, 511), v3 (to July 2024, 612), v4 (to September 2024, 713), v5 (to January 2025, 880) and v6 (to April 2025, 1,055) (Source: github.com). Developers cite a version or a date window, such as "v6" or "2407–2501," and scores from different windows are not comparable. As retrieved on September 19, 2026 the official leaderboard's latest window ran from August 1, 2024 to May 1, 2025 and the repository listed no release after v6 (Source: livecodebench.github.io).
LiveCodeBench Pro is a separate benchmark by a different team (Zihan Zheng and colleagues, June 2025). It draws harder problems from Codeforces, the ICPC and the IOI, has Olympiad medalists annotate each problem and analyze failed submissions, and reports a Codeforces-style Elo rating as well as pass rates by difficulty. Its paper was written to test claims that models "now outperform elite humans in competitive programming" and found that "without external tools, the best model achieves only 53% pass@1 on medium-difficulty problems and 0% on hard problems" (Source: arxiv.org). It publishes quarterly splits and a rotating "live" window.
CodeElo (Quan et al., Alibaba's Qwen team, January 2025) submits model solutions directly to the Codeforces judge and computes an Elo rating. Its authors argue that LiveCodeBench and similar tests "fall short due to the unavailability of private test cases, lack of support for special judges, and misaligned execution environments" (Source: arxiv.org).
Codeforces rating
Several developers report a "Codeforces rating" or "Codeforces Elo" next to or instead of LiveCodeBench. Codeforces is a contest site that rates its human contestants on an Elo-type scale, in which a rating difference predicts the probability that one contestant ranks above another. A model has no account history, so its rating is estimated. OpenAI's method, described in its February 2025 paper on competitive programming, simulates Division 1 contests held after the model's training cutoff, runs the full test suite with contest time and memory limits, allows the model 10 submissions per problem, computes the rank the model would have achieved in each contest, and then finds the rating that best explains those ranks given the ratings of the human participants (Source: arxiv.org). The paper notes that 10 full-test submissions is "close to but not strictly the same as the human affordance." Other developers use different procedures: DeepSeek rated R1 on "problems from 10 Div.2 contests along with expert-crafted test cases," from which it calculated expected ratings and percentiles of competitors (DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via Reinforcement Learning). Ratings from different procedures are therefore not on a common footing, even though they share a scale.
Development and maintainers
The ten authors are from UC Berkeley (Jain, Han, Yan, Zhang, Sen, Stoica), MIT (Gu, Solar-Lezama) and Cornell (Li), with Sida Wang. The paper acknowledges National Science Foundation grants and the industrial sponsors of Berkeley's Sky Lab, among them Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Samsung SDS and Uber. Code, data and model outputs are public on GitHub and Hugging Face. Leaderboard entries are produced with the project's open evaluation harness; the paper said a private test set for submitted models was planned. Independent measurements have been published by Artificial Analysis, which states that its evaluations "are conducted independently."
Results
In the paper's code-generation table the highest score was 41.90% for GPT-4o (May 2024), followed by GPT-4-Turbo at 41.10%; on Hard problems no model exceeded 5.1%. Reasoning models changed the scale within a year: DeepSeek reported 65.9% for R1 in January 2025, and the official leaderboard's final window is led by o4-mini (high) at 80.2%, with 99.1% on Easy problems and 63.5% on Hard. Later figures come from developers and third parties: Artificial Analysis lists Gemini 3 Pro Preview at 91.7%, and DeepSeek reported 93.5% for V4-Pro-Max in April 2026. On the Codeforces scale, OpenAI reported 808 for GPT-4o and 1,673 for o1 in September 2024, 2,724 for an early o3 checkpoint in February 2025, and DeepSeek reported 3,206 for V4-Pro-Max.

Interpreting scores
A LiveCodeBench score is meaningful only together with its problem window. A model scored on a window that predates its training cutoff may have seen the problems, which is the effect the paper documented for DeepSeek's 2023 models; a model scored on a short recent window is tested on few problems. The authors estimated 1 to 1.5 percentage points of variation from problem sampling alone on a 349-problem window and advised "proper judgement when comparing models with small performance differences."
The difficulty bands behave differently. On the official leaderboard's final window the top 18 entries all score between 97.3% and 99.1% on Easy problems, so the overall ranking among them is set by the Medium and Hard bands, where o4-mini (high) scores 89.4% and 63.5%. LiveCodeBench Pro, using harder problems, reports far lower pass rates for the same generation of models: GPT-5 (high) solves 6.7% of its Hard problems.
A Codeforces rating translates a model's contest results into the scale used for human contestants, which allows statements such as OpenAI's that o3 "would rank among the top 200 active participants worldwide," while "the very best human competitors remain much stronger than o3, with solve rates in excess of 85%." The comparison depends on assumptions that do not hold for humans, including 10 graded submissions per problem and, in some reports, access to a terminal or tools. The LiveCodeBench Pro authors conclude that "high performance appears largely driven by implementation precision and tool augmentation, not superior reasoning," and that models "struggle with nuanced algorithmic reasoning and complex case analysis, often generating confidently incorrect justifications."
Neither measure addresses work inside large codebases, which SWE-bench and Terminal-Bench target. DeepSeek's R1 report draws the same line: "LiveCodeBench and Codeforces are designed to measure model performance on algorithmic competition tasks, whereas SWE-Verified and Aider assess the model's capabilities on real-world software engineering problems."
Limitations and criticism
Stated by the authors
The paper lists four limitations: benchmark size, which shrinks further for newer models with later cutoffs; a focus on Python; sensitivity to prompts, which were not tuned per model; and the restriction to contest problems.
Test quality
Tests for many problems are produced by model-written input generators, not taken from the contest judge. The CodeElo authors cite the "unavailability of private test cases," missing support for problems that need a special judge, and execution environments that differ from the contest platforms as reasons existing benchmarks including LiveCodeBench "fall short."
Source mix
Although Codeforces is named as a source, only 9 of the 511 problems in the May 2024 release came from it, and those from its two easiest divisions. The Epoch AI analysis of SWE-bench Verified cites LiveCodeBench as the example of a benchmark whose "set of issues" is updated over time, in contrast with static tests (Source: epoch.ai).
Currency
The contamination defence depends on new problems being added. The public releases stop at problems from April 2025, so a model with a later training cutoff has no post-cutoff window in the public data.
Headroom
Third-party and developer scores above 90% leave little room at the top. OpenAI's April 2026 description of the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index lists ten component evaluations, and LiveCodeBench is not among them (Source: openai.com).
