SWE-bench is a benchmark that tests whether an AI system can resolve real software issues: given a bug report or feature request taken from GitHub and a copy of the project's code, the system must edit the code so that the project's own automated tests pass. It was introduced in October 2023 by Carlos E. Jimenez, John Yang and colleagues at Princeton University with 2,294 tasks drawn from 12 open-source Python repositories (SWE-bench: Can Language Models Resolve Real-World GitHub Issues?). A 500-task subset screened by human software engineers, SWE-bench Verified, was released with OpenAI in August 2024 and became the coding score most often quoted in frontier model announcements Introducing SWE-bench Verified (OpenAI, 2024). Reported Verified scores rose from 33.2% in August 2024 to above 95% in June 2026. In February 2026 OpenAI stated that the subset "no longer measures frontier coding capabilities" and stopped reporting it Why SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities (OpenAI, 2026); Epoch AI rated it "Flawed" in a September 2026 review, and the evaluation firm Vals AI archived its leaderboard as saturated (Source: epoch.ai; Source: vals.ai).
What it measures
The authors describe the task as end-to-end issue resolution. A model receives the text of an issue and a snapshot of the repository and must produce a patch, a file describing which lines to change. They argue that this "frequently requires understanding and coordinating changes across multiple functions, classes, and even files simultaneously," in contrast with earlier coding tests such as HumanEval, which "mostly involve self-contained problems that can be solved in a few lines of code" (SWE-bench: Can Language Models Resolve Real-World GitHub Issues?; Source: arxiv.org). The paper presents progress on the benchmark as a step "towards LMs that are more practical, intelligent, and autonomous."
Because a language model cannot browse a repository on its own, SWE-bench in practice evaluates a model together with its scaffold (also called a harness or agent): the surrounding software that feeds the model files, runs its commands and collects the final patch. Anthropic's engineering write-up states that the benchmark "doesn't just evaluate the AI model in isolation, but rather an entire 'agent' system," and that performance "can vary significantly based on this scaffolding, even when using the same underlying AI model" (Source: anthropic.com).
Epoch AI's 2025 analysis characterizes the Verified subset more narrowly than the paper's framing: it "mainly tests the ability of models (and their associated scaffolds) to navigate a Python codebase and fix well-defined, small issues with clear descriptions" (Source: epoch.ai).
Design
Dataset construction
Tasks were built by a three-stage pipeline. The authors scraped about 90,000 pull requests (proposed code changes) from 12 popular Python repositories: astropy, django, flask, matplotlib, pylint, pytest, requests, scikit-learn, seaborn, sphinx, sympy and xarray. They kept merged pull requests that both resolved a GitHub issue and changed the repository's test files. They then ran each candidate, keeping only those with at least one test that failed before the change and passed after it, and discarding any that produced installation or runtime errors. The result was 2,294 task instances (Source: arxiv.org). The paper reports that an average task has a 195-word issue description and a codebase of about 3,010 non-test files and 438,000 lines, and that the reference fix edits 1.7 files, 3.0 functions and 32.8 lines on average. The authors also released a separate training set of about 19,000 issue and pull-request pairs from 37 other repositories.
Task format
One task used as an example in the paper is astropy__astropy-14365, in which the issue reports that a file in the QDP astronomy data format "should read into a Table with errors, rather than crashing" when its commands are written in lower case; the fix changes how the library's parser matches those commands (Source: arxiv.org). The model sees the issue text and the repository as it stood before the fix. It does not see the tests.
Scoring
Each task carries two sets of tests taken from the original pull request. FAIL_TO_PASS tests fail on the unmodified code and pass once the issue is fixed. PASS_TO_PASS tests pass both before and after, and check that unrelated functionality has not been broken. A task counts as resolved only if the model's patch applies cleanly and every test in both sets passes; the headline metric is the percentage of tasks resolved Introducing SWE-bench Verified (OpenAI, 2024). The paper reports a median of 51 additional tests per task beyond the fail-to-pass tests. Most developers report pass@1, the share of tasks solved with a single attempt per task, often averaged over several independent runs. Since June 2024 the evaluation has run inside Docker containers, a harness the SWE-bench authors developed with OpenAI to make results reproducible.
Human baseline
No human solve rate has been measured. For the Verified subset, annotators estimated how long each fix would take "an experienced software engineer who has had a few hours to familiarize themselves with the codebase." OpenAI cautioned that the estimates "assume a software engineer who is able to figure out the solution" and that "we expect the baseline solve rate of a typical human software engineer to be lower than 100%" Introducing SWE-bench Verified (OpenAI, 2024). Epoch AI's tabulation of those labels found 39% of Verified tasks rated under 15 minutes, 52% rated 15 minutes to one hour, and three tasks rated over four hours, and noted that METR had found the estimates too optimistic (Source: epoch.ai).
Contamination controls
All tasks, reference fixes and tests are public, and the source repositories are widely used in model training. The paper argued that the collection pipeline could be re-run to produce tasks newer than any model's training data, and reported "little difference in performance" on issues from before and after 2023 for most models. OpenAI's 2024 Verified post nevertheless stated that models "pre-trained on internet text are likely to be contaminated on the tasks." The main SWE-bench sets have not been refreshed with new issues.
Versions and variants
- SWE-bench (full). The original 2,294-task test set.
- SWE-bench Lite. A 300-task subset (plus 23 development tasks) covering 11 of the 12 repositories, introduced to reduce evaluation cost. Tasks with images, external links, fewer than 40 words of description, edits to more than one file, or more than three edit hunks were removed (Source: swebench.com).
- SWE-bench Verified. OpenAI and the SWE-bench authors had 93 Python developers screen 1,699 randomly sampled tasks. Each task was labelled by three annotators for whether the issue was underspecified and whether the tests would reject valid solutions. 38.3% of samples were flagged for underspecified problem statements and 61.1% for unfair tests, and 68.3% were filtered out overall. The final 500 tasks include 196 rated as under-15-minute fixes and 45 rated as taking more than one hour. OpenAI stated that Verified "supersedes the original SWE-bench and SWE-bench Lite test sets" Introducing SWE-bench Verified (OpenAI, 2024).
- SWE-bench Multimodal. Introduced in October 2024 with 617 tasks from 17 JavaScript libraries, each containing at least one image in its issue text or tests (Source: arxiv.org). A September 2026 "v2" retains 480 tasks "with known flaky or ungradeable tests removed" (Source: swebench.com).
- SWE-bench Multilingual. 300 tasks from 42 repositories in nine languages (C, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, Ruby and Rust), built by Kabir Khandpur with the SWE-bench team and published in May 2025. Its baseline, Claude 3.7 Sonnet with the SWE-agent scaffold, resolved 43% of tasks against 63% on Verified (Source: swebench.com).
- Bash-only leaderboard. To compare models under one fixed scaffold, the SWE-bench team runs every model through mini-SWE-agent, a minimal loop that gives the model only a command-line shell: "No tools, no special scaffold structure" (Source: swebench.com).
- Derivatives by other groups. SWE-Bench Pro, from Scale AI, applies the same format to copyleft-licensed and private repositories. SWE-Bench+ (Aleithan et al., York University, October 2024) is a filtered re-collection described under Limitations. Anthropic's RSP evaluations use a 45-task "hard subset" of Verified, described below.
Development and maintainers
The original authors were Carlos E. Jimenez, John Yang, Alexander Wettig, Shunyu Yao, Kexin Pei, Ofir Press and Karthik Narasimhan, of Princeton University and the University of Chicago; the paper appeared at ICLR 2024 and acknowledges support from the National Science Foundation and an Oracle Collaborative Research award (Source: arxiv.org). The same group maintains swebench.com, the SWE-agent and mini-SWE-agent scaffolds, and related projects. Leaderboard entries for the general tracks are submitted by the teams that built the agents. In November 2025 John Yang published a script that measures how much of each submission matches the reference fix verbatim and wrote that the team would "ask for clarification on submissions with abnormal (>20%) exact match rates" (Source: swebench.com). The bash-only results are run by the maintainers. The most recent bash-only entries on swebench.com as retrieved on September 19, 2026 were dated February 2026 (Source: swebench.com).
Independent measurement is also published by Vals AI, which runs models on Verified under a bash-only mini-SWE-agent harness, and by Epoch AI, whose Benchmarking Hub lists 35 models under its own scaffold with a highest score of 83% (Source: vals.ai; Source: epoch.ai).
Results
At release, the best system in the paper, Claude 2 with retrieved file context, resolved 1.96% of the full test set (SWE-bench: Can Language Models Resolve Real-World GitHub Issues?). Agent scaffolds changed the picture: SWE-agent reached 12.5% in May 2024 SWE-agent: Agent-Computer Interfaces Enable Automated Software Engineering (Yang, Jimenez et al., 2024), and OpenAI recorded the top leaderboard agents at 20% on the full set and 43% on Lite as of August 5, 2024. On the new Verified subset, GPT-4o scored 33.2% that month. Developer-reported Verified scores then passed 49% in October 2024, 72% in May 2025 and 80% in November 2025, when Anthropic reported Claude Opus 4.5 as the first model above 80% (Source: technology.org). Anthropic reported 93.9% for Claude Mythos Preview in April 2026 and 95.5% for Claude Mythos 5 in June 2026. Progress ran behind some forecasts along the way: the AI 2027 scenario predicted 85% by mid-2025 against a best actual score of 74.5%, and an Epoch AI forecasting survey had a median of 88% for end-2025 against an actual 81% (Grading AI 2027's 2025 Predictions (AI Futures Project, February 2026)). The Stanford AI Index 2026 describes Verified performance as rising "from 60% to near 100% of the human baseline within one year" (Stanford HAI AI Index Report 2026).

Verified (bash-only, independently measured)
Every model runs under the minimal mini-SWE-agent scaffold with only a shell. Rows from swebench.com are run by the SWE-bench team; its release 2.x results use tool calling and are "not necessarily comparable" with release 1.x. Rows from Vals AI carry that leaderboard's update date rather than the date of each run.

Interpreting scores
A score is the share of tasks on which a hidden test suite passed; it is not a judgment of code quality, and Epoch AI notes that a patch can pass the supplied tests while introducing bugs those tests do not cover (Source: epoch.ai). There is no chance level in the usual sense: an empty patch scores zero.
The practical ceiling on Verified is disputed. Epoch AI estimated in June 2025 that between 5% and 10% of Verified tasks are invalid. OpenAI's February 2026 audit examined 138 tasks that o3 did not consistently solve and found that 59.4% of them had material flaws in the tests or description, which Epoch AI restates as a floor of 16.4% of the whole subset. Anthropic has since reported scores above 93%, and Vals AI has measured 97.00% for Claude Opus 5; OpenAI's audit argues that solving such tasks can indicate exposure to the reference solution during training rather than capability.
Scores depend heavily on setup. OpenAI observed in 2024 that GPT-4's score on SWE-bench Lite ranged from 2.7% to 28.3% depending on the scaffold, and Epoch AI estimated that a good scaffold can add up to 20%. The paired tracks above show the same model scoring differently under its developer's scaffold and under mini-SWE-agent; for Claude Opus 4.5 the figures are 80.9% and 76.80%. Reporting conventions also differ between developers. OpenAI reported on a 477-task subset, excluding 23 tasks that did not run on its infrastructure, while Anthropic from Claude 4 onward reported on all 500. Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet figure used 489 tasks. Anthropic has published both single-attempt averages and "high compute" figures that sample many attempts in parallel and select one with a scoring model, which raised Claude Sonnet 4.5 from 77.2% to 82.0%. Anthropic also found that infrastructure matters: giving containers five times the baseline memory raised SWE-bench scores by 1.54 percentage points in its experiment, and it advised skepticism about leaderboard gaps below 3 points on agentic coding evaluations generally (Source: anthropic.com).
On what a high score corresponds to in practice, Epoch AI concludes that Verified "does not capture the full spectrum of software engineering work, focusing instead on a narrow slice: bug fixes in familiar, open-source Python repositories." Django alone supplies nearly half of the tasks, five repositories supply more than 80%, and half of the issues date from 2020 or earlier.
Limitations and criticism
Flawed tests and descriptions
OpenAI created Verified because, in its assessment, the original set "systematically" underestimated models: some tests demanded details, such as an exact deprecation message, that the issue text never mentioned. Its February 2026 audit found the problem persisted in Verified. Of 138 hard tasks reviewed by at least six engineers each, 35.5% had "narrow" tests that enforce a particular implementation, 18.8% had "wide" tests that check functionality absent from the description, and 5.1% had other issues. One example requires a function named get_annotation that the issue never mentions, so that "many valid solutions fail the tests on import errors" Why SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities (OpenAI, 2026).
Contamination
Aleithan and colleagues reported in October 2024 that in 32.67% of the patches with which SWE-agent and GPT-4 had succeeded, the solution was given in the issue report or its comments, that a further 31.08% passed only because of weak tests, that filtering these out cut the resolution rate from 12.47% to 3.97%, and that over 94% of issues predated the models' knowledge cutoffs (Source: arxiv.org). "The SWE-Bench Illusion" (Liang, Garg and Moghaddam, June 2025) found that models could name the file containing a bug from the issue text alone with up to 76% accuracy on Verified tasks, against up to 53% on repositories outside the benchmark, which the authors read as evidence of memorization The SWE-Bench Illusion: When State-of-the-Art LLMs Remember Instead of Reason (Liang, Garg and Zilouchian Moghaddam, 2025). OpenAI's 2026 audit used GPT-5 to probe GPT-5.2-Chat, Claude Opus 4.5 and Gemini 3 Flash Preview, and reported that every model tested could reproduce reference fixes or task-specific details for some tasks; GPT-5.2's reasoning on one Django task recalled a parameter from the project's later release notes. OpenAI concluded that "improvements on SWE-bench Verified no longer reflect meaningful improvements in models' real-world software development abilities," stopped reporting the score, and recommended that other developers do the same. It initially recommended SWE-Bench Pro in its place and withdrew that recommendation in July 2026 (see SWE-Bench Pro).
Anthropic responded to the same concern differently. Its Claude Mythos Preview system card describes a Claude-based auditor that assigns each generated patch a probability of having been memorized, reports that "we still observe some signs of memorization," and states that removing flagged problems at any threshold leaves Mythos Preview's lead over earlier Claude models intact, concluding that "memorization does not explain its SWE-bench improvements" (Claude Mythos Preview System Card). Anthropic continued to report Verified through its June 2026 Fable 5 and Mythos 5 system card; the evaluation summary of its September 2026 Fable 5.1 system card lists SWE-bench Pro, Multilingual and Multimodal and omits Verified (System Card: Claude Fable 5.1 & Claude Mythos 5.1 (Anthropic, September 2026)).
Environment loopholes
In September 2025 Jacob Kahn and colleagues reported on the benchmark's GitHub repository that agents could read the answer from the repository's own history: a Claude Sonnet 4 run used git log --all and found the future commit that fixed the issue, and similar behavior appeared in Qwen3-Coder and GLM-4.5 trajectories. A SWE-bench maintainer replied the same day that the team was rebuilding the container images to remove future history (Source: github.com). In April 2026 researchers at Berkeley's Center for Responsible Decentralized Intelligence reported that a ten-line conftest.py file, which makes the pytest framework report every test as passing, "resolves" every Verified task without fixing anything, because the grader trusts test output produced inside a container the agent controls (Source: rdi.berkeley.edu). The authors state that they are not claiming current leaderboard leaders use such exploits.
Evaluation awareness
Anthropic's natural-language-autoencoder study found signs that Claude internally recognized it was being tested on 26% of SWE-bench Verified problems, without saying so, against under 1% in real usage (Natural Language Autoencoders Produce Unsupervised Explanations of LLM Activations).
Third-party verdicts
Epoch AI's September 3, 2026 review assigns Verified the verdict "Flawed," on the basis that OpenAI's audit gives "reasonable confidence that over 20% of questions have scoring-based issues." Vals AI labels its Verified leaderboard an "Archived Benchmark," stating: "Since performance on this benchmark has saturated, we no longer run this benchmark on new model releases." An Anthropic essay describes SWE-bench scores as having gone "from low single digits to saturation in about two years" (When AI Builds Itself (The Anthropic Institute, June 4, 2026)).
Use in policy and safety frameworks
OpenAI built Verified as part of its Preparedness Framework, stating in 2024 that it used SWE-bench "as one of several evaluations tracking the Medium risk level of the Model Autonomy risk category." Its system cards report Verified on the 477-task subset under model autonomy or AI self-improvement, including 38% for GPT-4.5 after mitigations (OpenAI GPT-4.5 System Card (February 2025)) and its use alongside OpenAI PRs and PaperBench in the gpt-oss model card (gpt-oss-120b & gpt-oss-20b Model Card (OpenAI, August 2025)). OpenAI's 2026 audits of Verified and SWE-Bench Pro both cite the Preparedness Framework as the reason measurement validity matters.
Anthropic used a 45-task "hard subset" of Verified, the tasks estimated to take more than one hour, as a checkpoint evaluation for AI R&D capability under its Responsible Scaling Policy, with a threshold of a pass rate above 50% averaged over 10 trials. Claude Opus 4.6 solved 21.24 of the 45 problems on average, "remaining below the 50% threshold of 22.5" (Claude Opus 4.6 System Card).
The Frontier Model Forum's report on managing cyber risks lists SWE-bench Verified among the benchmarks its member firms cite in model and system cards, naming Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI (Managing Advanced Cyber Risks in Frontier AI Frameworks). Forecasters have used the score as a milestone: AI 2027 projected 85% on Verified by mid-2025 (AI 2027), and Jack Clark cited the rise from about 2% to 93.9% in his May 2026 argument about automated AI research. The benchmark also serves as a testbed in safety research, including Redwood Research's untrusted-advice control protocol (Untrusted Advice for AI Control (Biddulph and Kaufman, Redwood Research, July 2026)) and the self-modifying Darwin Gödel Machine (The Darwin Gödel Machine (Sakana AI, May 2025)); MarketBench draws its 93 tasks from SWE-bench Lite (MarketBench: Evaluating AI Agents as Market Participants — Fradkin & Krishnan (April 2026)).
