Jay Obernolte is a U.S. Representative (R-CA), serving since 2021, and a principal House Republican voice on AI policy. A computer scientist by training, he is among the few members of Congress with formal computer-science credentials.
Roles
Obernolte co-chaired the House Bipartisan AI Task Force, which produced the substantive grounding for his later legislative work on AI standards and governance.
AI legislation
On April 29, 2026, Obernolte and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) introduced a 195-page bipartisan House AI bill consolidating standards, governance, and other provisions. Industry sources described the bill as the first cross-stakeholder consensus document of the cycle (Source: insideaipolicy.com). The standards-and-governance frame of the bill draws on Obernolte's earlier work on the House Bipartisan AI Task Force. See Lieu-Obernolte AI Bill (April 2026) for full details.
