MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding) is a test of knowledge and problem solving made up of four-option multiple-choice questions in 57 subjects, from elementary mathematics and US history to professional law and medicine. It was introduced in September 2020 by Dan Hendrycks and six co-authors and published at ICLR 2021 (Source: arxiv.org). The largest GPT-3 model scored 43.9% at release, against a chance level of 25%; GPT-4 reached 86.4% in March 2023, and by 2024 leading models were reported between 88% and 93% (Source: arxiv.org; github.com; GPT-4 Technical Report (OpenAI, arXiv 2303.08774, March 2023)). The Stanford AI Index listed MMLU in 2025 among the "traditional AI benchmarks" whose saturation had pushed researchers toward newer tests (Source: hai.stanford.edu), and the benchmark now appears mainly through derivatives: the harder MMLU-Pro, the corrected MMLU-Redux, and the multilingual MMMLU and Global-MMLU.
What it measures
The authors describe MMLU as a measure of "a text model's multitask accuracy," writing that "to attain high accuracy on this test, models must possess extensive world knowledge and problem solving ability." It was designed as a response to earlier language benchmarks such as GLUE and SuperGLUE, on which models had reached human-level scores within about a year of release; the authors wanted a test of what models had absorbed from pretraining on large text corpora, assessed across "the breadth and depth of a model's academic and professional understanding" (Source: arxiv.org). Developers have used it as shorthand for general knowledge: Anthropic's Claude 3 announcement glossed it as "undergraduate level expert knowledge" (Source: anthropic.com).
Design
Dataset construction
The questions "were manually collected by graduate and undergraduate students from freely available sources online," including practice questions for the Graduate Record Examination and the United States Medical Licensing Examination, questions written for undergraduate courses, and questions written for readers of Oxford University Press books. Several subjects appear at more than one level, labelled Elementary, High School, College or Professional; the Professional Psychology task, for example, draws on practice questions for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. There are 15,908 questions in all: a development set of five questions per subject, used as worked examples in the prompt, a validation set of 1,540 questions and a test set of 14,079, with at least 100 test questions per subject (Source: arxiv.org).
Task format and an example
Every item is a question with four options labelled A to D. One microeconomics example in the paper reads: "One of the reasons that the government discourages and regulates monopolies is that" followed by four options, of which the keyed answer is that "consumer surplus is lost with higher prices and lower levels of output." A conceptual physics example asks what the acceleration of a ball is immediately after it is thrown downward, with options of 9.8 m/s², more, less, or "cannot say unless the speed of throw is given" (Source: arxiv.org).
Scoring and the few-shot protocol
The score is the percentage of test questions answered correctly, usually reported as an average over the 57 subjects. The original protocol is few-shot: the prompt contains five solved example questions from the same subject before the test question, and the model's answer is read from the probabilities it assigns to the letters A, B, C and D. Later evaluations often use zero-shot chain-of-thought instead, in which the model is given no examples and writes out its reasoning before answering; OpenAI's simple-evals library adopted that setting on the view that it "is a better reflection of the models' performance in realistic usage" (Source: arxiv.org; github.com).
Human baselines
The paper gives two reference points. "Unspecialized humans from Amazon Mechanical Turk obtain 34.5% accuracy on this test." For experts, the authors took the 95th-percentile score of real test-takers on the exams the questions come from, about 87% for the US Medical Licensing Examination, made "an educated guess when such information is unavailable," and arrived at an estimated expert-level accuracy of approximately 89.8%. That figure is an estimate assembled by the authors, not a measurement of any group of people taking MMLU (Source: arxiv.org).
Splits and contamination controls
All three splits, including the test set with its answers, are public, and the questions were themselves collected from public websites. The benchmark has no held-out portion and no contamination control (Source: arxiv.org).
Versions and variants
MMLU-Redux (Gema et al., June 2024) is a manually re-annotated subset of 5,700 questions spanning all 57 subjects, produced by a group of researchers who examined the answer key for errors. They estimate that 6.49% of MMLU questions contain errors and found that 57% of the analysed Virology questions did Are We Done with MMLU? (Gema et al., 2024). DeepSeek and Moonshot AI report MMLU-Redux alongside MMLU in their technical reports (Source: arxiv.org; arxiv.org).
MMLU-Pro (TIGER-Lab, June 2024) removes easy and faulty MMLU questions, adds harder ones from other sources and expands each question to ten options. It has its own page.
MMLU-CF (Zhao et al., December 2024) is a contamination-free rebuild with newly sourced questions, decontamination rules and a closed test set; its authors report that GPT-4o scored 73.4% on it in the 5-shot setting, against 88.7% on MMLU (Source: arxiv.org; github.com).
MMMLU (OpenAI, September 2024) is the MMLU test set translated into 14 languages, including Yoruba, by professional human translators, released on Hugging Face under an MIT licence. OpenAI said human translation "increases confidence in the accuracy of the translations, especially for low-resource languages" (Source: huggingface.co). Its earlier multilingual MMLU results for GPT-4 had used machine translation with Azure Translate (Source: openai.com; OpenAI GPT-4.5 System Card (February 2025)); the GPT-4 Technical Report gives three-shot scores in 26 translated languages, from 84.1% in Italian and Afrikaans to 62.0% in Telugu, against 85.5% in English (GPT-4 Technical Report (OpenAI, arXiv 2303.08774, March 2023)).
Global-MMLU (Singh et al., December 2024) covers 42 languages with translations checked by compensated professional and community annotators, and labels each question as culturally sensitive or culturally agnostic. The authors found that 28% of MMLU questions require culturally sensitive knowledge, that 84.9% of the questions requiring geographic knowledge concern North America or Europe, and that model rankings change depending on which subset is used Global MMLU: Understanding and Addressing Cultural and Linguistic Biases in Multilingual Evaluation (Singh et al., 2024). Anthropic reports Global-MMLU (as GMMLU) in its system cards: for Claude Opus 4.7 the average over low-resource languages rose to 86.2% from 78.4% for Opus 4.6, and the gap between English and the average of other languages narrowed to 3.6 points (Claude Opus 4.7 System Card).
Development and maintainers
Hendrycks and his co-authors were at the University of California, Berkeley, and other institutions when the paper was written; Hendrycks later co-founded the Center for AI Safety, which lists MMLU among its benchmarks and co-developed Humanity's Last Exam, and he is also first author of the MATH benchmark (Dan Hendrycks). The dataset and reference evaluation code are distributed from a public GitHub repository, and the dataset has not been revised since release (Source: github.com).
There is no official leaderboard with verified submissions. Developers report their own figures, and several third parties run the test under fixed conditions. Stanford's Center for Research on Foundation Models launched a HELM MMLU leaderboard with standardized prompts and published raw predictions, saying that "MMLU scores reported by model creators are frequently produced in inconsistent or problematic ways, which hinder their comparability" (Source: crfm.stanford.edu; see HELM (Holistic Evaluation of Language Models)). Hugging Face's Open LLM Leaderboard ran MMLU for open-weight models until its second version replaced it with MMLU-Pro in 2024, saying that models were "reaching baseline human performance" on it and that it contained errors (Source: huggingface.co), and Epoch AI maintains a compilation of externally reported scores (Source: epoch.ai).
Results
At release the best few-shot model, the 175-billion-parameter GPT-3, scored 43.9%, smaller GPT-3 models scored at the 25% chance level, and a fine-tuned UnifiedQA model scored 48.9% (Source: arxiv.org). DeepMind's Gopher reached 60.0% in December 2021 and Chinchilla 67.5% in 2022 (Source: epoch.ai). GPT-4 was reported at 86.4% in March 2023 (GPT-4 Technical Report (OpenAI, arXiv 2303.08774, March 2023)), and in December 2023 Google reported 90.04% for Gemini Ultra, which it described as the first result above the authors' 89.8% expert estimate, using a sampling method described under Interpreting scores (Source: arxiv.org). Through 2024 the leading models were reported within a few points of one another: Claude 3 Opus 86.8%, Llama 3.1 405B 87.3%, GPT-4o 88.7% (The Claude 3 Model Family: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku (Anthropic model card, March 2024); Source: arxiv.org; github.com). OpenAI's reasoning models moved the top reported figure to 92.3% for o1-preview in September 2024 and 93.4% for o3 (Source: openai.com; openai.com). Most frontier launch posts in 2025 and 2026 no longer report English MMLU; MMMLU remains in Google DeepMind's and Anthropic's tables, where scores for the leading models lie between 89% and 93% (Source: deepmind.google).

Interpreting scores
The floor is 25%, the expected score from guessing among four options. The practical ceiling is below 100%: the MMLU-Redux authors estimate that 6.49% of questions contain errors, with the error rate far higher in some subjects, and show that model scores and rankings on individual subjects shift when the questions are corrected Are We Done with MMLU? (Gema et al., 2024). The authors' 89.8% expert estimate is a composite of the 95th percentile of specialists in each subject; no individual is claimed to reach it across all 57 subjects (Source: arxiv.org).
Reported scores depend on how the test is administered. In June 2023 Hugging Face found that three widely used implementations of MMLU gave the same LLaMA-65B model 63.7% (Stanford's HELM), 63.6% (the authors' original code) and 48.8% (the EleutherAI evaluation harness then used by its leaderboard). The differences lay in details such as whether the model's answer is scored by comparing probabilities of the letters A to D, by generating text, or by comparing probabilities of the full answer strings (Source: huggingface.co). Researchers at Saudi Arabia's National Center for AI showed that changing the order of the options or the method of answer selection moved models by up to eight positions on a leaderboard (Source: arxiv.org), and Zheng and colleagues traced part of this to a "selection bias" in which models prefer particular option letters (Source: arxiv.org). The MMLU-Pro authors measured swings of 4–5%, and up to 10.98%, across 24 reasonable prompt styles MMLU-Pro: A More Robust and Challenging Multi-Task Language Understanding Benchmark (Wang et al., 2024).
Sampling methods also matter. Google's headline 90.04% for Gemini Ultra used chain-of-thought with 32 samples and a fallback rule, while the same model scored 83.7% in the standard 5-shot setting, below GPT-4's 86.4%; Stanford's HELM team called the comparison of the two headline numbers "not a controlled comparison" (Source: arxiv.org; crfm.stanford.edu). By contrast, chain-of-thought prompting makes little difference on MMLU for most models (GPT-4o scored 88.7% with it and 87.2% without), which the MMLU-Pro authors read as a sign that the benchmark is "mostly knowledge-driven" MMLU-Pro: A More Robust and Challenging Multi-Task Language Understanding Benchmark (Wang et al., 2024).
The original paper reported that model performance was "lopsided," near chance on subjects such as professional law and morality while much higher on others, and that GPT-3 was poorly calibrated, meaning its confidence did not track its accuracy (Source: arxiv.org). An average score therefore says little about any one subject.
Limitations and criticism
Saturation
The MMLU-Pro paper stated in mid-2024 that scores were "clustering closely together, making it difficult to distinguish between models," noting that GPT-4o, Claude 3 Opus and GPT-4 Turbo lay within about 2 points of one another MMLU-Pro: A More Robust and Challenging Multi-Task Language Understanding Benchmark (Wang et al., 2024). OpenAI wrote in September 2024 that on some benchmarks recent frontier models "do so well … that these benchmarks are no longer effective at differentiating models," while still reporting that o1 beat GPT-4o on 54 of 57 MMLU subcategories (Source: openai.com). The Stanford AI Index 2025 described "the saturation of traditional AI benchmarks like MMLU, GSM8K, and HumanEval" and also used the benchmark to track efficiency: the smallest model scoring above 60% fell from the 540-billion-parameter PaLM in 2022 to the 3.8-billion-parameter Phi-3-mini in 2024 (Source: hai.stanford.edu).
Contamination
Because the test set is public and was drawn from public web pages, its questions may appear in training data. Deng and colleagues tested this by hiding one wrong option of a test question and asking models to reproduce it; ChatGPT and GPT-4 produced an exact match 52% and 57% of the time on MMLU test items (Source: arxiv.org). The MMLU-CF authors cite contamination as their reason for building a closed replacement (Source: arxiv.org).
Label errors
Beyond the 6.49% overall estimate, the MMLU-Redux authors concluded that the errors "obscure the true capabilities" of models and called for the dataset to be revised; it has not been Are We Done with MMLU? (Gema et al., 2024). The MMLU-Pro team's expert review separately flagged 350 MMLU-derived questions with incorrect answers and 385 as bad questions within the portion it examined MMLU-Pro: A More Robust and Challenging Multi-Task Language Understanding Benchmark (Wang et al., 2024).
Cultural and linguistic scope
The Global-MMLU authors argue that progress on MMLU "depends heavily on learning Western-centric concepts" and that simply translating the questions carries that bias into other languages Global MMLU: Understanding and Addressing Cultural and Linguistic Biases in Multilingual Evaluation (Singh et al., 2024).
Comparability of developer-reported scores
The HELM team listed non-standard prompting, undisclosed prompt templates, evaluation on private model snapshots and third-party results lower than developers' own among the reasons published MMLU numbers cannot be compared directly (Source: crfm.stanford.edu). On the general problems of public benchmarks see AI Benchmarks and Evaluation.
Use in policy and safety frameworks
MMLU is a general capability measure and is not used as a risk threshold in the frontier safety frameworks. It appears in measurement and standards work as a reference example: the draft NIST AI 200-2 on testing, evaluation, verification and validation lists MMLU among its selected large-language-model benchmarks (NIST AI 200-2 ipd — The TEVV-Athlon Framework for Evaluating AI Systems (initial public draft, August 2026)). OpenAI's system cards use its translations to report multilingual performance: the GPT-4.5 system card reports the 14-language human-translated set, with Yoruba scores of 0.621 for GPT-4o, 0.682 for GPT-4.5 and 0.754 for o1, and the GPT-5.2 system card update reports the model "generally on par" with its predecessor; the GPT-4o system card used an MMLU subset to test whether performance differed across speakers' voices. Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 system card reports MMMLU as its measure of multilingual reasoning. Composite measures that place benchmarks on a common scale, such as the framework in A Rosetta Stone for AI Benchmarks — Ho, Denain, Atanasov, Albanie, Shah (Epoch AI / Google DeepMind, 2025), draw on MMLU's long series of reported scores, and US–China capability comparisons in the 2025 AI Index use the MMLU gap between the best American and Chinese models, which it put at 17.5 points at the end of 2023 and 0.3 points at the end of 2024 (Source: hai.stanford.edu).
