GPQA

high confidence · updated 2026-09-21

Tests whether a model can answer graduate-level multiple-choice science questions that skilled non-experts cannot solve even with web access. Built at New York University by Rein et al. (2023); 448 questions in biology, physics and chemistry, of which the 198-question Diamond subset is the version reported in most frontier-model launch tables and run independently by Epoch AI and Artificial Analysis.

GPQA (Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A) is a set of multiple-choice questions in biology, physics and chemistry written and cross-checked by people who hold or are pursuing a PhD in the relevant field. It was introduced in November 2023 by David Rein and colleagues at New York University and published at the first Conference on Language Modeling in 2024 (GPQA: A Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A Benchmark; Source: github.com). The name refers to the design goal that a capable person outside the field cannot find the answer with a search engine. Most reported scores use GPQA Diamond, a 198-question subset on which both expert checkers agreed with the answer key and most non-experts failed. The paper's strongest baseline, GPT-4, scored 38.8% on Diamond in 2023 (Source: arxiv.org); by September 2026 Epoch AI's own runs put the leading models at 94–96% (Source: epoch.ai).

What it measures

GPQA measures whether a system can answer hard, specialised science questions that have a known correct answer. The authors built it for research on scalable oversight, the problem of supervising an AI system on questions the supervisor cannot answer or check unaided. Their stated requirement was a dataset of "questions which have a ground truth answer known to certain experts, but which even highly skilled, well resourced, and motivated non-experts still cannot reliably solve," so that experiments in which a non-expert works with an unreliable model have no trivial solution such as looking the answer up (Source: arxiv.org). The paper states that it makes "no claim that GPQA is a representative sample of any population of questions that are likely to come up in the course of scientific practice."

In model launch tables Diamond accuracy is presented as a measure of scientific knowledge and reasoning: Google DeepMind labels the row "Scientific knowledge" and OpenAI has labelled it "PhD-level science questions" (Source: deepmind.google; Source: openai.com).

Design

Dataset construction

The authors hired 61 contractors through the freelancing platform Upwork, each of whom had completed or was enrolled in a PhD programme. Every question passed through four stages. A writer composed a question in their own subfield with four answer options and a written explanation of why the keyed answer is right and the others are plausible but wrong. A first expert validator in the same field answered it and gave feedback; the writer could revise; a second expert validator then answered the revised question. Finally three non-expert validators, who were the same contractors working outside their own field, attempted it with unrestricted time and full internet access, excluding AI assistants (Source: arxiv.org).

Payment was built around bonuses so that writers were rewarded for questions that experts got right and non-experts got wrong. A writer received a $10 base payment per question, $20 for each expert validator who answered correctly, $15 for each non-expert who answered incorrectly, and a further $30 if both experts were right and at least two of three non-experts were wrong. Non-experts received $10 per attempt and a $30 bonus for a correct answer. The authors estimate an average hourly payment of about $95. Non-experts were required to spend at least 15 minutes per question and averaged 37 minutes, with a median of 30 (Source: arxiv.org).

Questions are spread unevenly across fields. In the extended set 227 are physics, 214 chemistry and 105 biology; the largest subdomains are organic chemistry (144), molecular biology (85), quantum mechanics (64) and general chemistry (64). Engineering, accounting and corporate law were piloted and dropped because the questions received were not of sufficient quality (Source: arxiv.org).

Task format and an example

Each item is a paragraph-length question with four options; the median length including options is 561 characters. Writers were told to make each question answerable by an expert without seeing the options, so that the set could also be used in free-response form, though the paper does not do so. One example published in the paper, from general chemistry, describes a reaction of a liquid hydrocarbon run at 80 °C and 20 bar, reports how the proton NMR spectrum changes, and asks which groups of elements the initially added catalyst compounds come from, with options naming combinations of metal and non-metal compounds from particular periods of the periodic table. The authors ask that examples not be reproduced in plain text online and embed a canary string, a unique identifier that lets developers filter the dataset out of training corpora; the dataset archive in the public repository is password-protected (Source: arxiv.org; Source: github.com).

Splits

Of 564 questions collected, 18 were withheld as an unreleased held-out set. The remaining 546 form GPQA Extended. The main set of 448 keeps questions on which at least one of the two experts agreed with the answer key and at most two of the three non-experts answered correctly, and is the set the authors recommend for experiments. GPQA Diamond keeps the 198 questions on which both experts agreed and at most one of three non-experts answered correctly. An expert who answered wrongly was still counted as agreeing if, after seeing the writer's explanation, they identified a clear mistake in their own answer or showed they understood the explanation; for Diamond this allowance applied only to the second validator (Source: arxiv.org).

Scoring

The score is the percentage of questions for which the model's chosen letter matches the answer key. With four options, random guessing gives 25%. How the answer is elicited varies by evaluator. The paper tested zero-shot and few-shot prompts with and without chain-of-thought reasoning, in which the model writes out its reasoning before answering. OpenAI's simple-evals library uses a zero-shot chain-of-thought prompt; Epoch AI uses that prompt, reorders the options randomly on each run, and gives no credit when the final line is not in the required "ANSWER: LETTER" form, which it notes can push a poorly formatted model below the 25% chance level (Source: github.com; Source: epoch.ai; Source: epoch.ai).

Human baselines

On the extended set the first expert validator scored 66.5% and the second, answering the revised question, 64.8%, each with a 95% confidence interval of ±4.0 points; non-experts scored 34.1% (±2.3). The headline figures of 65% and 34% in the abstract are these extended-set numbers. Expert accuracy on the main and Diamond sets (72.5% and 81.2%) and non-expert accuracy (30.5% and 21.9%) are, as the paper states, "skewed by selection effects," because those subsets were chosen using the same validators' answers. The authors examined all 191 cases in which the second expert disagreed with the key and, discounting cases where the expert acknowledged a clear mistake, estimated that about 74% of extended-set questions have an uncontroversially correct answer, a rate they expect to be higher on the filtered subsets (Source: arxiv.org).

A second human baseline comes from OpenAI, which in September 2024 "recruited experts with PhDs to answer GPQA-diamond questions" in order to compare them with its o1 model (Source: openai.com). Epoch AI gives the experts' score in that exercise as 69.7% (Source: epoch.ai).

Versions and variants

The three nested sets (Extended, main, Diamond) were released together and have not been revised; no later version of the dataset has been issued. Reporting has converged on Diamond. The paper's own baselines found no consistent difference in model accuracy between the three sets (Source: arxiv.org). Items from GPQA have also been reused inside other evaluations: OpenAI's CoT-Control suite, which tests whether a model can be instructed to alter its chain of thought, pairs problems from GPQA and four other benchmarks with such instructions (Reasoning models struggle to control their chains of thought, and that's good (OpenAI, March 2026); GPT-6 Astra System Card (OpenAI, September 2026)), and Anthropic researchers used GPQA as one of two multiple-choice benchmarks in a study of how model errors divide between bias and variance (The Hot Mess of AI: How Does Misalignment Scale with Model Intelligence and Task Complexity?).

Development and maintainers

The authors were at New York University; David Rein is also listed with Cohere and Samuel R. Bowman with Anthropic. The project acknowledges funding to Bowman from Eric and Wendy Schmidt, on the recommendation of Schmidt Futures, and from Open Philanthropy, together with National Science Foundation grants and support from the Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative (Source: arxiv.org). The dataset is distributed from a GitHub repository, with the data archive marked CC BY 4.0 and the repository under the MIT licence (Source: github.com; Source: github.com).

There is no official leaderboard and no submission or verification process. Scores reach the public in two ways: developers publish their own figures, usually for Diamond with no tools, and third parties run the questions themselves. Epoch AI's Benchmarking Hub had run 313 models on Diamond by September 2026 under one prompt and scoring rule, and Artificial Analysis runs Diamond independently as one of the ten evaluations in its Intelligence Index (Source: epoch.ai; Source: artificialanalysis.ai; Source: openai.com). OpenAI stopped updating the simple-evals results table in July 2025 (Source: github.com).

Results

At release in November 2023 the strongest baseline, GPT-4 with few-shot chain-of-thought prompting, scored 38.8% on Diamond, and giving GPT-4 a search tool did not raise that figure (Source: arxiv.org). Developer-reported scores reached about 50% with Claude 3 Opus in March 2024, or 59.5% with majority voting over 32 samples (The Claude 3 Model Family: Opus, Sonnet, Haiku (Anthropic model card, March 2024)), and about 59% with Claude 3.5 Sonnet that June (Source: github.com). In September 2024 OpenAI reported 77.3% for o1 and described it as the first model to surpass the PhD experts it had recruited (Source: openai.com). The Stanford AI Index reported a gain of 48.9 percentage points on GPQA between 2023 and 2024 (Source: hai.stanford.edu). In May 2025 Epoch AI observed that state-of-the-art scores were clustered in a narrow band around 83%, which prompted its review of whether the remaining questions were sound (Source: epoch.ai). Google reported 91.9% for Gemini 3 Pro in November 2025 (Source: blog.google), and the frontier models released during 2026 have mostly been reported or measured between 90% and 95%, with Epoch AI's highest measured result at 95.8% for GPT-6 Astra (Source: epoch.ai).

Diamond

Accuracy on the 198-question Diamond subset without tools. Rows marked "measured by Epoch AI" use one zero-shot chain-of-thought prompt and strict answer parsing across all models, and give Epoch's standard error; the label after the model name in the Setting cell is the reasoning-effort or thinking-budget setting Epoch ran. Developer-reported rows use each developer's own prompt and sampling. Where a developer's table reports a competitor's model, the Setting cell names the reporter.

Interpreting scores

The floor is 25%, the rate of random guessing, although strict answer parsing can produce lower figures (Source: epoch.ai). The ceiling is below 100% by an uncertain margin. The paper estimated that roughly a quarter of extended-set questions might not have an uncontroversially correct answer before filtering; for Diamond, Epoch AI's Greg Burnham reviewed the questions that fourteen strong models most consistently missed, judged about 2.25 of the six he examined in detail to be invalid, and extrapolated to an invalid-question rate of about 8%, concluding that "at least 90% of the benchmark is valid" (Source: epoch.ai). On that estimate, scores in the low-to-mid 90s are close to what a system answering every valid question correctly would obtain.

Small differences between models are within measurement noise. With 198 questions, Epoch AI's standard errors run from about 1.4 to 3.5 percentage points, and the paper notes that the dataset's size "does not provide a lot of statistical power for accuracy comparisons" (Source: epoch.ai; Source: arxiv.org). The same model can also carry several published figures. Claude Opus 4.8 appears at 93.6% in Z.ai's June 2026 comparison table, 92% in OpenAI's July 2026 table and 91.0% in Moonshot AI's, against 91.0% in Epoch AI's run (Source: z.ai; Source: openai.com; Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence (Moonshot AI, July 2026)).

Scores depend heavily on how much reasoning the model is allowed. In Epoch AI's runs GPT-5.6 Sol scored 82.8% with reasoning disabled, 89.9% at low effort and 93.5% at maximum, and GPT-5.2 ranged from 73.2% with no reasoning to 91.4% at its highest setting. More reasoning did not always help: Epoch measured Claude Sonnet 5 at 90.5% on its xhigh setting and 80.3% on max (Source: epoch.ai). Sampling method matters less at the top: OpenAI's o1 moved from 77.3% with one sample to 78.0% with a 64-sample majority vote (Source: openai.com).

Performance is uneven across fields. OpenAI reported o1 at 92.8% on the physics questions, 69.2% on biology and 64.7% on chemistry (Source: openai.com). Burnham found that organic chemistry made up 70% of the 40 questions strong models most often missed, against 36% of Diamond as a whole, and could not determine whether the cause was model weakness in spatial reasoning or a higher rate of faulty questions in that subfield (Source: epoch.ai).

On the comparison with human experts, OpenAI wrote when reporting that o1 had surpassed its recruited PhDs that "these results do not imply that o1 is more capable than a PhD in all respects — only that the model is more proficient in solving some problems that a PhD would be expected to solve" (Source: openai.com). Because the format is multiple choice, a model is also helped by knowing that one of four options is correct; Burnham noted forthcoming work claiming that accuracy falls substantially when the options are removed (Source: epoch.ai).

Limitations and criticism

The authors list four limitations: the small size of the dataset; the use of unusually skilled non-experts, so that the 34% figure is an upper bound that "will likely not directly translate to realistic settings"; possible bias from recruiting through Upwork without controlling for region or demographics; and the gap between the dataset and the setting it stands in for, which is supervising systems on questions no human can yet answer (Source: arxiv.org).

Whether the benchmark still separates frontier models has been questioned since 2025. Burnham's May 2025 review was prompted by top scores clustering near 83% and by a remark from David Rein, one of the benchmark's creators, speculating that something was wrong with the remaining 17% of questions. Burnham concluded that reports of the benchmark's exhaustion were "probably exaggerated" but that "even if saturation has not yet come for GPQA, it's only a matter of time," and suggested that developers might be aiming only for a respectable score on it while competing elsewhere (Source: epoch.ai). A July 2026 Federal Reserve Board staff note treats the question as settled at the level of benchmark generations, writing that early standardised-test benchmarks "were quickly saturated, with subsequent expert level reasoning benchmarks (e.g. GPQA and ARC-AGI) following a similar pattern" (The AI Buildout and the Economy: Publicly Available Data to Assess AI's Impact (FEDS Notes, July 2026)). Epoch AI's cross-benchmark difficulty estimates place GPQA Diamond at 1.8, below SWE-bench Verified (2.3), FrontierMath (2.8) and Cybench (3.1) (A Rosetta Stone for AI Benchmarks — Ho, Denain, Atanasov, Albanie, Shah (Epoch AI / Google DeepMind, 2025)). The Stanford AI Index grouped GPQA in 2025 with the newer benchmarks on which performance had improved quickly enough to push researchers toward harder tests such as Humanity's Last Exam and FrontierMath (Source: hai.stanford.edu).

Contamination, meaning the presence of test questions in a model's training data, is a standing concern because the questions are public. The controls are the canary string, the password on the dataset archive and the authors' request not to post examples; the 18-question held-out set has not been used for public reporting (Source: arxiv.org; Source: github.com).

Use in policy and safety frameworks

GPQA Diamond appears in the capability sections of developer documentation, including Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 system cards, where it is the listed measure of graduate-level science reasoning. OpenAI's CoT-Control evaluation, reported in the GPT-6 Astra system card as evidence on whether a model can manipulate its visible reasoning, draws part of its task set from GPQA (Reasoning models struggle to control their chains of thought, and that's good (OpenAI, March 2026)). Outside the laboratories it is used as a general yardstick: the Federal Reserve note cited above uses it to illustrate benchmark saturation, and Exponential View's 2026 analysis of AI economics groups models by GPQA Diamond performance to estimate how quickly the price of a given capability level falls (The State of the AI Economy (Exponential View, June 2026)).
